RELATIVE CLAUSE

Clauses

clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a predicate (or a verb). There are two types of clauses

Examples of Clauses:

Independent Clauses are complete sentences. They can stand alone and express a complete thought.

Examples: I want some cereal.
Marie likes cats.
Joseph is a good soccer player.

Dependent Clauses contain a subject and a predicate, but they do not express a complete thought.

Examples: When it is raining
Because you were late
Before you go to bed

All of these groups of words contain both a subject and a verb, but they cannot stand alone. They do not express a complete thought.

There are three main types of dependent clauses: adjective, adverb, and noun. They are named by the way they function in a sentence.

An adjective clause describes or gives more information about a noun-tells us which one, what kind, or how many.

Example: The bag that someone left on the busbelongs to Mrs. Smith.

An adverb clause describes or gives more information about the verb-tells us when, where, how, to what extent, or under what condition something is happening.

Example: She cried because her seashell was broken.

noun clause takes the place of a noun in the sentence.

Example:  Whoever ate the last piece of pie owes me!

*********  LESSON 13: TUESDAY 12.5.2020 - ENGLISH **********

READING PASSAGE

Read the article about GPS technology.

GPS Technology

GPS units use a network of satellites to show where the user is on a map. They have very large memories and the new ones also have satellite radio. GPS technology
provides users with an amazing amount of information such as local traffic conditions and even the weather forecast. Many people use this gadget on a daily basis when they don’t know or aren’t sure how to get to a particular place. Others use them to plan long journeys. People who love outdoor adventures also find them useful especially when hiking through areas where there are no roads. GPS units are really important to all users because if they get lost, they can just push a button and get a clear picture of exactly where they are at that moment.

But how does a GPS work? There are at least 24 GPS satellites which go round the earth twice a day. They are powered by solar energy or backup batteries. Each satellite sends signals that are picked up by GPSs on earth. The GPS processes these signals and displays the position of the user. The user then enters an address on his or her GPS and waits for directions in the language of his or her choice. The GPS uses signals from at least four different satellites to provide this information.
How accurate is GPS information? Thanks to recent developments in the technology, GPSs are extremely accurate. They are able to locate a position within 10 metres. Satellite signals can pass through clouds, but solid buildings such as skyscrapers decrease the strength of these signals. To receive the best possible signals, users
shouldn’t be walking or driving when they turn on the receiver, nor when they request or receive information. They should also try to make sure there is nothing between them and the sky.
All new GPSs can give users detailed directions for how to get somewhere. However, some of these gadgets also have special capabilities. For example, one type can find out what is happening on the road kilometres ahead of where the user is at that moment. If there is a traffic jam, it can suggest another route which avoids it. It does this by accessing the Internet through a mobile phone connection. Although this function can be very useful, sometimes it doesn’t work very well, so it’s probably a good idea for the user to listen to traffic reports on the car radio as well, just in case.
