Summary of A Poison Tree
- Popularity: William Blake, a famous American poet, wrote “A Poison Tree”, a descriptive and straightforward poem about human emotions and their consequences. It was first published in Blake’s 1794 volume Songs of Experience. The poem illustrates the key human emotion, anger, and the consequences of being angry with someone. It also explains that anger becomes deadly and devious if it is not expressed honestly. However, the popularity of the poem lies in the fact that it deals with one of the common feelings of human life.
- “A Poison Tree” As a Representative of Hatred: The poet has discussed the duality of human nature in this poem. He says that his anger with his friend vanishes as soon as he expresses it. But he does not air his annoyance with his foe which grows and morphs into something poisonous. He further adds that he nurtures his anger with fear, resentments, sarcasm, and fake smiles. These feeling grow as a poison tree or a tree of anger, and a shiny fruit sprouts from the tree. One day, his enemy enters into his garden and dies after tasting this deceitful fruit. His death gives immense pleasure to the speaker.
- Major themes in “A Poison Tree”: Hatred, anger, revenge are the major themes of the poem. The poem discusses the catastrophic effects of unexpressed anger. The poet, very artistically, delves deep into the darker side of the human mind and captures the damage that anger does to the heart where it nourishes and becomes a poison. Blake explains that it is easy to forgive friends, but enemies are never forgiven. And, when a person tries to hide his hatred, it gradually grows into a mighty and destructive force.

POEM : THE DAY THE BULLDOZER CAME
CREDIT TO MS GRACE
Stanza 1
|
The day the bulldozers came
Rooks were building
Crazy egg baskets in the oaks;
Green flies sizzled by the pond
And a cold-eyed toad
Waited for them.
|
When the bulldozers came to the forest, Rooks (a type of bird) were making nests (egg baskets) in oak trees.
Green flies were buzzing around the pond while a toad was waiting to eat them.

Stanza 2
|
The day the bulldozers came
Squirrels were scattering
Up tree trunks,
And leapt from branches
That were hardly there.
|
When the bulldozers came to the forest, squirrels were scared and they were running up the trees. They tried to leap from branch to branch, but the tree branches were no longer there. The bulldozers had knocked them down.

Stanza 3
|
The fox
Stirred in his sleep
As the ground trembled.
‘Ha ha!’ he thought,
‘I’m quite safe,
Deep down in the Earth,
No one can get me here.’
Then the bulldozer came.
|
The fox woke up from his nap but he went back to sleep. He felt the ground shake but he thought he was safe deep down in the foxhole. However, the bulldozers came and dug him out of the soil!

Themes:
- Destruction of nature
The bulldozers are designed to knock down trees and flatten lands for development. However this has resulted in the destruction of nature. Many trees are knocked down. Animals lose their home and have no where to go.
2. Change is inevitable
Life is always changing. Change cannot be avoided. For example, the bulldozers are invented to replace the animals and help human to develop new lands.
3. Alertness
It is important to be alert to our surroundings. For example, the fox believes that as long as he hides in the hole, he will be safe. However he does not realise that the change that humans make is now able to harm him even though he is deep in the ground. He needs to be alert so that he can survive the change.
4. Disruption of life
The lives of the animals in the forest are disrupted by human’s activities. For example, the bulldozers knock down the tree branches where the squirrels live. The bulldozers also disrupt the home of the foxes by digging up the foxholes.
Moral values:
- We should be alert to any threats and changes around us.
- We should be ready to face changes.
- We should respect the nature and the animals that depend on it.
- We should protect flora and fauna and the only Earth we have.
- We should understand that development projects can bring harm to the nature.

Red is a sunset
Blazing and bright.
Red is feeling brave
With all your might.
Red is a sunburn
A spot on your nose.
Sometimes red, is a red red rose.
Red squiggles out when you cut your hand.
Red is a brick
And the sounds of a band.
Red is hotness
You get inside
When you’re embarrassed
And want to hide.
Fire-cracker, fire-engine
Fire-flicker red –
And when you’re angry
Red runs through your head.
Red is an Indian
A Valentine heart,
The trimmings on
A circus cart.
Red is a lipstick
Red is a shout
Red is a signal
That says, “Watch out!”
Red is a great big
Rubber ball.
Red is the giant-est
Colour of all.
Red is a show-off,
No doubt about it –
But can you imagine
Living without it?
